Baltimore Social Security Disability Lawyers: New Programs for Veterans
January 5, 2017After serving our country, veterans often return home with serious injuries, ranging from lost limbs to PTSD. Social Security is an important resource that provides veterans with disability benefits. However, obtaining the benefits they need and deserve can be a time-consuming process. Fortunately, there are programs available that help veterans secure their benefits much sooner.
“Health IT” is a computer-linking program that allows the Social Security Administration (SSA) to obtain medical records from all VA facilities. After being tested successfully at Social Security locations across the United States, the program went live on Veteran’s Day 2016. Instead of having to wait weeks or months to obtain records from the VA, veterans can now have their information in minutes. This is helpful considering how important it is to have all the appropriate medical documentation available when filing a claim.
Wounded veterans and veterans with a disability rating of 100 percent are given top priority in the Social Security system, and their claims are filed more quickly. Military service members who become wounded while on active duty on or after October 1, 2001 are eligible for an expedited process.
It is recommended that active duty military apply for disability benefits if they are disabled, even if they continue to collect a salary while receiving medical treatment. Veterans are still eligible for Social Security disability benefits even if they are on active duty and receiving a salary from the military, unless they are participating in certain types of work for profit.
